Inspiring curiosity and excitement about scientific discovery
Each spring the graduate students of the University of Pennsylvania's Biology Department open the doors of Leidy and Lynch Labs to local high school students. During the day, high school students experience scientific
research up close through carefully planned, hands-on experiments designed by
graduate students in their fields of research. Through these experiments and their interactions with Penn's graduate students, high schoolers are introduced to cutting edge research while learning about the
exciting opportunities for careers in the sciences.
in Science Day 2011, our pilot yearFive Biology labs and 25 high school students from Maustbaum AVTS participated. Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response, we doubled in size this year, and invited 50 students from Science Leadership Academy and Roxborough High School to visit 10 biology labs. We hope to expand further in the future to include other science departments and additional dates in the fall/winter semester.
